Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Is there really a decreasing supply of engineers in the U.S.?

A.  In the current economy, this may seem hard to believe.  Almost everyone knows of an engineer who is out of work.  Not "if", but "when" the economy recovers, the problem will manifest itself.  This is one area where there are plenty of leading indicators.  Engineering retirements will begin to increase dramatically as the first "Baby Boomers" (1946-1964) reach age 65 in 2011.  Many of them have already taken early retirement.  The "Generation X" population (1965-1980) is less than 60% of the Boomers.  Engineering enrollment in universities is down.  Demand for engineers to meet the needs of the twenty-first century is projected to increase.  Engineering solutions for tomorrow need to address this reality today.

Q.  Are you just another consultant suggesting my company outsource engineering jobs to India and China to save money?

A.  Absolutely not.  The starting point is to ensure your company has the internal talent and sustainable plans to perform or manage the technical tasks that differentiate you from your competition.  Those tasks that can and should be outsourced to drive speed, quality and/or cost without compromising your competitive advantage will be evaluated.  Technical service providers (TSPs) are only one option for performing outsourced work.  Equipment suppliers and raw material/finishing supply vendors are also well-positioned to do some of this work.  TSPs and suppliers that have global presence will ensure you have access to the talent as demographics change.  While India and China offer cost savings today, it is their projected number of engineers in the future that may make them desirable as a strategic partner and part of a solution for your company.

Q.  For my company to be competitive, don't I need my engineers to innovate more?

A.  Having creative engineers on your payroll is important, but it is unrealistic to assume all good ideas are going to come from within the walls of your company.  Successful companies will know how to leverage both internal and external talent to drive their innovation.

Q.  Why wouldn't I just work directly with some of the large global technical service providers (TSPs) to develop a solution?

A. Based on experience, TSPs will tell you they can do everything because they want your business and billable hours.  Even in areas where they can do the work, they may not be the right solution.  Engaging an unbiased, fresh perspective in helping your company define the right set of solutions will ensure you get what is right for you.  Even if you do decide to outsource some of your tasks, you want to streamline your processes first or you will simply be buying "your mess for less".
